How to add feet and inches (formula)

To add feet and inches, convert everything to inches (or use a feet inch fraction calculator), add, then convert back. In inches: total_in = (feet × 12) + inches + fraction. Then feet = floor(total_in ÷ 12) and inches = total_in mod 12.

8 ft 7-3/8 in + 3 ft 10-5/8 in → (103.375 + 46.625) = 150 in = 12 ft 6 in

Worked example: tape measure math
