Roof pitch calculator for slope, angle & rise

HammerCalc’s roof pitch calculator helps framers and roofers turn pitch (rise over 12) into angle, rise, and layout numbers — inside the same roofing calculator workflow as rafters and everyday feet-inch math.

What this roof pitch calculator does

Dial in pitch or slope and see the matching angle and rise over a given run. Use it beside HammerCalc’s rafter tools when you need cut lengths, not just a pitch label on a plan.

  • Pitch ↔ angle conversion for common roof slopes
  • Rise-over-run math that matches framing language (X/12)
  • Pairs with the rafter calculator for common and hip layouts
  • Works with feet, inches, fractions and mixed metric units

A roofing calculator that lives next to your cut math

Web pitch widgets stop at an angle. HammerCalc keeps pitch, rafters, and dimensional math in one framing calculator so you are not screenshotting numbers between apps on the roof.

How to calculate roof pitch and angle (formula)

Pitch is usually written as rise over 12 of run: pitch = rise / 12. Angle ≈ arctan(rise / run). For a known run: rise = run × (pitch_in_12 / 12). Example: 6/12 pitch → angle ≈ 26.57°.

6/12 pitch → tan⁻¹(6/12) ≈ 26.57° · On a 12 ft run, rise = 6 ft

Worked example: pitch to rise and angle

Plan calls for a 6/12 roof over a 12 ft half-span:

  • Given: Pitch 6/12, run 12 ft
  • Rise: 12 × (6/12) = 6 ft
  • Angle: tan⁻¹(0.5) ≈ 26.57°

FAQ

What is a roof pitch calculator?

It converts roof slope (usually rise over 12 inches of run) into angle and rise for a given span — the numbers framers use before cutting rafters.

How do I convert roof pitch to degrees?

Take arctan(rise ÷ run). For 6/12, arctan(0.5) ≈ 26.57°. HammerCalc’s roof tools show this visually.

Is this the same as a rafter calculator?

Related but not identical. Pitch tools focus on slope and angle; rafter tools turn pitch plus run into cut length. HammerCalc includes both.

Does HammerCalc work as a roofing calculator on iPhone?

Yes. Roof and rafter tools run on iPhone, iPad, and Mac with the same subscription.
